    Recover

    What is trauma?

A trauma is categorised as being a part of or witnessing an event that may be life threatening. Such an event can be confronting and challenge our beliefs about the world. It is not unusual to experience an emotional aftershock even though the event has passed it can continue to impact on our lives and functioning.

Some people will recover; however, others may find difficulties in resolving the emotionality and the symptoms can persevere and need professional support.

Early intervention is cornerstone of effective recovery and is vital to ensuring that symptoms do not deteriorate and to the development of a more severe disorder and a major impact on both personal and occupational functioning.

Types of traumatic events can include but not limited to:

    • Any type of serious accident such as motor vehicle, workplace, personal event or similar.
    • Robbery or home invasion
    • Assault which can include physical or sexual
    • Domestic violence
    • Exposure to suicide of a family or friend
    • Working in confronting situations such as working with those who have experienced abuse.
    • Witnessing a life-threatening event
    • Community violence
    • Natural disaster
    • Working as a first responder such as Ambulance, Police, SES, Fire Services or Emergency department.
    • Military

    Common symptoms include:

    • Snappy and irritable mood or anger outbursts
    • Trouble sleeping
    • Unwanted thoughts of images of the event
    • Feelings of agitation and jumpiness
    • Memory problems and difficulty making decisions or concentration
    • Nightmares
    • Feeling exhausted and fatigued
    • Headaches
    • Avoiding anything that reminds you or is similar to the event
    • Withdrawal from family and friends

    Intervention

Often, we can experience these symptoms for a short time and this is a normal response and we then return to our normal functioning, however should these symptoms continue it is important to seek professional assistance. Seeking help will lessen the impact of the emotional aftershock has on your life and you can return to normal functioning.

We only use treatment approaches that have been shown to be effective in reducing the symptoms and are not invasive. All of our treatment approaches are evidence based and have been used extensively with success.

    • Trauma Focussed Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (TF – CBT)
